play in the shadows

2016

Chinese shadow puppetry originated during the Han Dynasty (206B.C. - 220 A.D.), and it has existed as one of the most traditional forms of Chinese opera for centuries. The most sophisticated among all its subgenres is the Shanxi shadow play, famous for its delicate leather puppets decorated with various ornaments. The project sought to design a shadow puppet museum in Shanxi capable of preserving and promoting the heritage of the art of shadow puppetry, preventing it from obsolescence. The form of the building was generated through the fluid movements of the puppets when played, as well as the anamorphic effects of light and shadow. Traditional elements of ornamentation were applied to the building façade, enabling the museum to become the shadow puppet itself within the city.
