triple decker triplet

2021

This artist residency and exhibition space explores the architectural surreal through deception and revelation. Two identical Somerville triple-deckers, purged of all eccentricity, flank a third that has been ripped and distended into something else. Here, the cheery elements of the vernacular take on new meanings: walls become non-structural, and their studs, now exposed, begin to suggest the backstage of a theater.

Exhibition attendees enter at the street and are betrayed by the illusions of perspective and solidity. As the walls wedge open, they reveal the artists’ studio, a factory typology built in concrete where artworks—and the reality of the visitors—are fabricated. Initially unaware of the new spaces that surround them, attendees move through rooms and down the lengthened corridor, catching glimpses of the real beyond their reality.
